 Elective Home Education

Elective Home Education (EHE) is the chosen route for some parents and carers
who choose not to send their child to school full-time but assumes responsibility for making sure their child receives a full-time education other than at school

Elective Home Education (EHE)

Elective Home Education (EHE) is the term used by the Department for Education (DfE) to describe a parent's decision to provide education for their children at home instead of sending them to school.

The responsibility for a child’s education rests with their parents. In England, education is compulsory but school is not. If a child is not educated at school then parents should be providing a suitable full time education at home, and this is referred to as Elective Home Education (or EHE).

If you are considering home educating, please take advice available from the council’s Education and Welfare team before making a decision. If your child has an EHCP and is enrolled at a special school, you will need permission from the Northumberland SEN team. Contact them by email at SEN@northumberland.gov.uk

You can contact the team by email at ehe@northumberland.gov.uk or call 01670 622 800.
