Shape the future of SEND services in Northumberland

We want to hear your views to shape the future of services for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Northumberland.

Families are invited to complete an online survey sharing their experiences about what is working well and what needs to change. Areas covered included health, education, social care, and access to leisure activities in their local communities.

The council has worked closely with the Northumberland Parent Carer Forum (PCF) to develop the survey and the feedback will help to set the county SEND partnership’s vision and priorities over the next three years.

Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson, Cabinet Member for Inspiring Young People, said: “We want to hear what life is like for families with children with special educational needs and disabilities in Northumberland today.

“It’s really important for us to hear about what is working well and what we need to do better. “We want every child in Northumberland to have the best start in life, to have fun with their family and friends and reach their potential.

“By completing this online form and sharing your views, you can help tell us what would make a difference and shape the future of our services.” Since the last survey was carried out in 2020, the council and its partners have acted on feedback to improve services including:

  • The new Local Offer website bringing all the support available for families into one place

  • More support for families with children with SEND at Northumberland’s family hubs – including groups and activity sessions tailored for young people with send from 0-25. This is helping more families to access support as early as possible.

  • More mental health teams for schools are now working with young people across Northumberland

  • A new Student Inclusion Council is championing the voice of young people in schools

  • A new website is improving support and information available around sensory processing

  • Through the council’s learning provider, Northumberland Skills, more students have the opportunity to study closer to home and gain real world work experience. To take part in the survey visit https://nland.cc/SENDsurvey
