 School exclusions

Here we explain the process of school exclusion.
This section signposts and explains guidance regarding the suspension and permanent exclusion of pupils, alongside alternative provision available.

School exclusions

There are two types of exclusion:

  1. Suspension - a short term exclusion as a consequence of breaching the school's behaviour policy

  2. Permanent exclusion - a permanent termination of the child/young person's place in school in relation to behavioural breaches

The Local Authority is responsible for ensuring that statutory obligations are upheld in relation to permanent exclusions. The council works with schools to ensure fairness, consistency and transparency leading to positive outcomes and destination for each pupil going through this process.

The following fact sheet documents provide comprehensive information about the school exclusion process and alternative provision information to help guide you through the process.
