How the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment can help unlock education
Specialist support is essential for a child or young person with vision impairment to be able to develop the broad range of skills needed to access the national curriculum, extra-curricular activities and to prepare them for adulthood.
The Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI) is a UK wide framework developed by sector partners, and it supports children and young people with vision impairment aged 0 – 25 to access an appropriate and equitable education.
The CFVI:
-
Is inclusive – the CFVI provides an overview of the key areas of learning that will enable the child or young person with vision impairment in your school to access their education and extra-curricular activities in the most inclusive way, and with as much independence as possible
-
Promotes best practice - the CFVI is used by specialist staff from the vision support team to help plan and teach these key skills to the child or young person
-
Shares understanding - the CFVI provides a shared language to aid discussions and understanding amongst all involved in the child/young person’s education; how and when these skills should be taught by suitably qualified specialists and how they can be reinforced by non-specialists.
The CFVI outlines 11 key areas of learning including facilitating an inclusive world, independent living skills, mobility, accessing information, sport, social communication and preparing for adulthood.
Not only can the CFVI improve the education experiences of blind or partially sighted children and young people, it also provides a shared language and guidance on best practice for everyone who supports them, including non-specialist staff, parents/carers and the young people themselves.
